Who Visits This Blog? Sufferers, Strugglers, & Supporters
The readers and podcast listeners who follow my ministry typically struggle in one way or another with issues such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, self-harm, eating disorders, or some other medically assigned psychiatric diagnosis. Often times, they are confused and concerned about how to approach their struggles in a God-honoring way. Many of them struggle with guilt or shame because they have been labeled with a problem from a medical doctor. They want to respond biblically to their challenges but are unsure how to do so. I can frequently sense their confusion about how faith in Christ intersects with their problems in meaningful, transformative ways. They also wrestle with decisions about whether or not to make medications a part of their holistic approach to body and soul care—they are afraid of making a choice that demonstrates a lack of faith in Christ. My readers find themselves eager to know what the Bible has to say about their issues, and want to hear it said in truth and love from a compassionate voice who understands the desperation of their hardship—a fellow traveler who can sympathize with their pain. Unfortunately, my readers have voiced they do not always feel like their local church is a place where they can turn to for help. Whether or not the notion is founded, they believe their particular brokenness will cause them to become embarrassed, shunned, or rebuked. As a result of past experiences, they are disappointed by the ways people have tried to suggest help to them and are nervous about inviting others back into their private pains.

The other segment of readers and listeners who follow my ministry consist of helpers and caregivers—those who are supporting someone walking through a challenging season in life (like I described above). These readers have broken hearts over their loved one's struggles and want to help, but are unsure how to go about doing so. They have a compassionate heart and know Christ is the ultimate remedy, but need concrete, actionable steps to put into practice to effectively love and counsel well. These helpers are have their own discouragements over how hard it has been to walk alongside the one they are caring for, but they understand the call to one-another care takes time and long-suffering. The bottom line is: they want to serve well and love well, and they want to know how to go about doing it in a helpful, God-glorifying way.

Reading Pilgrim’s Progress couldn’t have been more timely for me, as I could relate to the struggles depicted in the story, finding comfort, solace, and encouragement between its pages. Author John Bunyan adeptly puts […]

Timothy Keller on Counterfeit Gods

Video: Counterfeit Gods with Timothy Keller

What thing, if you lost it, could almost mean that you would lose the will to live? What thing, if you lost it, could mean that almost all significance and value would be drained out of your life? Whatever that thing is… the bible calls it an ‘idol’. Timothy Keller makes an excellent introduction to the topic […]
