Overcoming Anger by Grace

video featured on Thrive Moms
Do you struggle with your anger? I know I do. Anger is something we all battle against in our daily lives, and can often be a tremendously destructive wrecking ball in our personal relationships. Sinful anger does not busy itself with guarding the heart (Proverbs 4:23), but rather commits itself to guarding worldly desires at the cost of obedience to Christ.

But more than that, our anger can signify more dangerous issues at hand: a desire to "play God." The truth is, our anger is typically a sour fruit of a bad root in our hearts...an evidence of an idol we refuse to surrender.

Analyzing our anger can be a wonderfully fruitful exercise and catalyst for spiritual maturity in Christ. But it's hard, ugly work. A challenging, painful demolition of idols and misguided worship. Yet, the gospel promises this labor to be constructive, not destructive. So we have hope. We sift through the rubble of our anger. We recognize we have been given freedom in Christ to respond to tempting situations in different, God-honoring ways.

As we examine our hearts, the Spirit helps us understand that our mouths and bodies and expressions have been commissioned to become instruments of grace. And we become empowered by such grace to respond in truth and grace as we become more deeply affected by the grace of God towards us. Anger does not produce the righteousness of God (James 1:20). But grace? I think we're on to something.

In this video produced by Thrive Moms, I share five biblical truths that help followers of Christ overcome anger by grace. I first learned this material at the Institute for Biblical Counseling and Discipleship and am overjoyed for the opportunity to pass it along to you. Sinful anger is a root within our hearts. It's not something being done to us, it's something coming out of us – the consequence of protecting our threatened desires.

Anger mismanagement
Anger is a problem both in the world and in the church. It is both deceptive and dangerous because for the angry person all anger feels righteous. This session explores the nature of righteous versus unrighteous anger and discusses the gospel truths that address the angry heart
